A preview of the Parallel Sessions
13 May 2010
The 2010 Amsterdam Global Conference on Sustainability and Transparency will convene a debate on how reporting can be used to help build a better future. Thought leaders from business, finance, government and civil society will discuss the political, strategic and practical choices confronting the world today.

Alongside the Main Hall sessions at this year’s conference, participants will have a choice of over 40 parallel sessions to attend which will define the building blocks of more effective reporting. These sessions are designed to foster learning about current reporting practices, and to further the discussion around the future of reporting by providing interactive panel sessions, workshops, and debates. This year’s parallel sessions have been divided into 3 categories: Learning, Shaping the Future, and the Academic Conference.

Sessions identified as ‘Learning’ cover topics such as the harmonization between both the Earth Charter Principles and the GRI Guidelines, sustainability reporting for SMEs, reporting in emerging economies, XBRL, integrated reporting, and the latest trends in online sustainability reporting. Most ‘Learning Sessions’ will consist of panel discussions involving thought leaders and practitioners who are keen to share their knowledge and experience with participants.

The ‘Shaping the Future’ sessions touch upon burgeoning areas of sustainability reporting, including the role of the media in shaping a transparent economy, stakeholder engagement using interactive technology, NGO reporting, the role of financial markets in shaping reporting, digital tools available to make reporting easier, and the future of reporting on human rights. Speakers in these sessions include Alan Knight from AccountAbility, Jeremy Hobbs from Oxfam International, Anneke Sipkens from People 4 Earth, and many more distinguished guests.

The ‘Academic Conference’, organized by Prof. Ans Kolk and Prof. Brendan O’Dwyer of the University of Amsterdam, offers an excellent opportunity for interaction and exchange between academics and practitioners. A series of six debates will focus on important topics in sustainability/CSR reporting. These interactive sessions will bring together prominent established scholars and younger researchers to explore themes such as assurance of sustainability reporting, carbon disclosure, NGO accountability and carbon performance and measurement. In addition to the academic sessions, poster presentations will provide opportunities for junior and senior scholars to discuss their latest research with those present at the conference.
